The Global Crossing Terminal Building completes the Global Crossing Fiber Optic Ring around South America. The 37,400 Sq Ft facility, designed by the Benton Design Group in just 3 months, was constructed under an accelerated program in 6 months with some areas of the building being made available for the Owner's equipment installations in less than 4 months. Designed to be operational
during earthquakes and sustained winds to 150 mph, the high security
facility includes such features as 370 Tons (Expandable to 550 Tons)
of 100% redundant critical humidity and temperature controlled HVAC
systems, clean agent FM 200 fire suppression systems, two redundant
groups of four 650 KVA power generation plants, CCTV monitoring, and
programmable proximity card entry systems. |

After a survey of all general contractors in the Virgin Islands, AT&T Submarine System selected Benton Construction Co., Inc. to construct the first Fiber Optics Cable Landing Station in St. Croix. The 20,000 Sq Ft masonry and structural steel building, completed in 6 months, included numerous sophisticated and highly redundant systems to support the 24-hour/7 day telecommunications operation. In addition, Benton constructed the Collocation Building and a Manager's Residence nestled around an historic windmill (shown in the aerial photograph).
